Dambulla – The Golden Cave Temple of Sri Lanka

Located in the Central Province, Dambulla Cave Temple, also known as the Golden Temple of Dambulla, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site that has served as a pilgrimage destination for centuries. The complex features five magnificent caves adorned with over 150 Buddha statues and intricate wall paintings depicting scenes from the life of the Buddha and Sri Lankan history.
Built under the protection of a massive rock overhang, the temple’s origins date back to the 1st century BCE during the reign of King Valagamba, who took refuge here before reclaiming his throne. The peaceful atmosphere, combined with breathtaking art and panoramic views of the surrounding plains, makes Dambulla a must-see cultural landmark on any Sri Lankan itinerary.
